2-Day Wayanad Itinerary from Mysore: A Complete Trip Plan

Wayanad is one of those destinations that makes you feel like you’ve travelled much farther than you actually have.

From Mysore, the journey takes you towards Kerala’s Western Ghats, where forests, misty hills, coffee and spice plantations, waterfalls, caves and scenic viewpoints replace the busy city landscape.

But Wayanad is not a destination where you can simply pick five attractions from Google and expect them to fit neatly into two days.

The district is spread across a large area, and some attractions that look close on a map can take considerable time to reach because of winding hill roads.

So if you have two days in Wayanad from Mysore, route planning matters.

This itinerary focuses on a practical combination of wildlife, history, nature, viewpoints and local food, while keeping the driving manageable.

Is 2 Days Enough for Wayanad?

Yes — two days can give you a very good introduction to Wayanad.

But two days are not enough to see everything.

Instead of trying to cover every famous attraction, this itinerary divides the trip geographically:

Day 1

Mysore → Muthanga → Edakkal Caves → Sultan Bathery → Stay

Day 2

Pookode Lake → Lakkidi Viewpoint → Banasura Sagar Dam → Mysore

This gives you a good mix of:

  • Wildlife
  • Prehistoric history
  • Mountains
  • Lakes
  • Viewpoints
  • Local food
  • Scenic road travel

And importantly, it avoids turning your entire holiday into a checklist.

Day 1: Mysore to Wayanad

5:00 AM – Leave Mysore

For a two-day Wayanad trip, an early start is one of the best decisions you can make.

The official Wayanad district administration lists Mysore at approximately 150 km from Kalpetta, although your exact distance and travel time will depend on your route and destination within Wayanad.

Leaving around 5:00 AM gives you enough flexibility to reach the eastern side of Wayanad early and still have a full day of sightseeing.

Keep breakfast either before leaving Mysore or at a convenient stop along the route.

Travel tip

You’re travelling towards forest areas, so follow all road and wildlife regulations. Avoid stopping at unauthorised locations inside forest stretches.

7:00–10:00 AM – Optional Muthanga Wildlife Experience

If wildlife is important to you, you can begin your Wayanad trip with Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary.

Muthanga lies close to the Karnataka border and is part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The district administration describes it as a major wildlife habitat containing elephants, deer, bison and other species.

Current listings show safari windows in the morning and afternoon, but safari availability and boarding arrangements can vary, so confirm the current schedule and booking requirements before building your entire day around it.

Important:

A wildlife safari is optional, not compulsory.

If you’re not particularly interested in wildlife, skip Muthanga and continue towards Sultan Bathery and Edakkal Caves.

That will give you a much more relaxed first day.

10:00 AM – Breakfast / Early Lunch Stop

If you’ve done the wildlife experience, stop for a proper meal around Sultan Bathery before continuing.

If you skipped the safari, you can have breakfast earlier and reach Edakkal sooner.

Don’t make the mistake of leaving yourself hungry just because you’re trying to stay on schedule. Wayanad sightseeing involves walking and climbing, especially at Edakkal Caves.

11:00 AM – Visit Edakkal Caves

Now head to one of Wayanad’s most fascinating attractions: Edakkal Caves.

Despite the name, Edakkal isn’t a conventional cave. It is a prehistoric rock shelter formed by a large boulder wedged between two larger rocks.

The site is famous for its ancient engravings and is of considerable archaeological importance. The Wayanad district administration notes that some of the oldest engravings date back thousands of years.

Current timing

Kerala Tourism currently lists Edakkal Caves visiting hours as:

8:00 AM–2:00 PM

Monday: Closed

This timing is extremely important when planning a two-day itinerary.

Don’t push Edakkal to the afternoon assuming you can visit whenever you want.

Suggested time:

1.5–2 hours

The climb involves stone steps and uneven terrain, so wear comfortable footwear and carry water.

1:00 PM – Lunch in the Sultan Bathery Area

After Edakkal, stop for lunch.

You can choose a local Kerala restaurant or a place offering a wider South Indian menu.

If you’re travelling with family, choose a restaurant with convenient parking and enough seating rather than spending another hour searching for a particular restaurant.

A local meal is also a good opportunity to try Kerala-style dishes if that’s something you enjoy.

Suggested time:

45–60 minutes

2:15 PM – Explore Sultan Bathery

After lunch, keep the afternoon relaxed.

You can explore parts of Sultan Bathery, stop for tea or coffee, or simply continue towards your accommodation.

Don’t add another major attraction just because you have an empty hour.

You’ve already had an early start, and Day 2 will involve another full sightseeing route.

3:30 PM – Check In and Relax

Check into your hotel or resort.

Depending on where you’re staying, you can spend the late afternoon relaxing, enjoying the property or exploring nearby surroundings.

This is one of the biggest advantages of planning the trip over two days rather than attempting Wayanad as a rushed day trip from Mysore.

6:00 PM – Enjoy a Relaxed Wayanad Evening

Use the evening to slow down.

Have tea, explore your resort surroundings or simply enjoy the cooler weather.

Wayanad’s appeal isn’t only its tourist attractions. The forests, plantations and mountain atmosphere are part of the experience.

Have dinner relatively early and get enough rest for Day 2.

Day 2: Lakes, Viewpoints and Banasura

Day 2 takes you towards the Vythiri–Lakkidi and Banasura side of Wayanad.

The route gives you a completely different experience from Day 1.

7:00 AM – Breakfast and Check Out

Start the second day with breakfast.

If you’re checking out, keep your luggage packed and ready so you don’t lose sightseeing time later.

A comfortable start around 7:00 AM gives you enough time to reach Pookode Lake during its current published visiting window.

9:00 AM – Pookode Lake

Start your Day 2 sightseeing at Pookode Lake.

The lake is surrounded by forested hills and offers boating and other visitor activities. Kerala Tourism describes it as a freshwater lake near Vythiri, with boating, a children’s park and shopping facilities.

Current timing

Kerala Tourism currently lists Pookode Lake visiting time as:

9:00 AM–2:00 PM

That’s why we’re putting it early in the itinerary.

Suggested time:

1.5–2 hours

If you want to go boating, allow additional time for queues.

11:00 AM – Lakkidi Viewpoint

After Pookode Lake, drive towards Lakkidi Viewpoint.

Lakkidi is one of the scenic gateway points into Wayanad and offers views over the winding mountain roads and surrounding valleys.

It’s a short stop, but a worthwhile one if the weather is clear.

Suggested time:

30–45 minutes

Don’t worry if mist covers the valley. That’s part of the unpredictable charm of the Western Ghats.

12:00 PM – Lunch Break

Now stop for lunch.

If you’re travelling through the Vythiri side, you have several restaurants to choose from.

For example, India Gate Restaurant & Bakes in Vythiri currently operates from morning through late evening, making it a convenient option around this part of the route. India Gate Restaurant & Bakes

If you’d rather eat closer to Kalpetta, there are plenty of options there as well.

Suggested time:

45–60 minutes

1:15 PM – Head Towards Banasura Sagar Dam

After lunch, continue towards Banasura Sagar Dam.

The dam is one of Wayanad’s major attractions and is surrounded by the Banasura hills.

The Wayanad district administration describes Banasura Sagar as India’s largest earthen dam, and the site is known for its scenic landscape and boating opportunities. It is approximately 21 km from Kalpetta.

Suggested time:

1.5–2 hours

Take time to enjoy the landscape rather than treating the dam as another quick photograph.

3:30 PM – Coffee or Tea Break

After Banasura, take a short break.

Wayanad is known for its coffee and spice plantations, so this is a good opportunity to stop for a cup of local tea or coffee.

If you’re buying souvenirs, consider:

  • Wayanad coffee
  • Spices
  • Honey
  • Homemade chocolates
  • Local products

4:15 PM – Begin Your Journey Back to Mysore

Now start your return journey.

Don’t add another major attraction at this point.

You have already covered a good selection of Wayanad’s eastern and central attractions, and the return drive itself takes time.

Depending on traffic, road conditions and your exact starting point, you can expect to reach Mysore later in the evening.

7:30–9:00 PM – Reach Mysore

Your actual arrival time will depend on traffic, breaks and the route you take.

And that’s perfectly fine.

The goal of a two-day trip isn’t to return at an exact minute.

It’s to make sure the itinerary is realistic enough that you don’t spend the final hours desperately trying to fit in one more attraction.

What If You Don’t Want to Visit Muthanga?

That’s completely fine.

In fact, I’d recommend skipping the wildlife stop if your group isn’t particularly interested in safaris.

You can instead make Day 1:

Mysore → Sultan Bathery → Edakkal Caves → Lunch → Wayanad Heritage Museum → Hotel

This gives you a more relaxed cultural and historical day.

The important thing is not to add attractions simply because they appear on a Wayanad checklist.

Can You Add Soochipara Falls?

Yes, but don’t simply add it on top of this itinerary.

Soochipara Falls involves a walk/trek through the forest, and Kerala Tourism describes the route as involving challenging terrain.

If waterfalls are your priority, you can replace one of the Day 2 attractions with Soochipara.

For example:

Pookode Lake → Lunch → Soochipara Falls → Return towards Mysore

But trying to combine Pookode + Banasura + Soochipara + multiple other attractions into the same day would make the schedule unnecessarily tight.

What About Chembra Peak?

Chembra Peak is better treated as a separate adventure plan, rather than something you casually add to a two-day sightseeing itinerary.

The Wayanad district administration notes that reaching the peak involves a trek that can take almost a full day.

If trekking is your main reason for visiting Wayanad, build the trip around Chembra rather than trying to squeeze it between sightseeing stops.

What Should You Eat in Wayanad?

Food is part of the trip, especially when travelling through Kerala.

Depending on your preferences, look for:

  • Kerala meals
  • Appam and stew
  • Malabar-style dishes
  • Porotta and curry
  • Puttu and kadala curry
  • Fresh seafood where available
  • Local snacks
  • Wayanad coffee

For a quick stop around Kalpetta, OLAN Restaurant Wayanad is one current option, with Kerala cuisine and long operating hours. OLAN RESTAURANT WAYANAD

For a stop around Sultan Bathery, Mathai’s Restocafe is another current option. Mathai’s Restocafe

Restaurant timings can change, so check before making a particular restaurant a fixed part of your itinerary.

How to Travel from Mysore to Wayanad

For a two-day Wayanad trip, transport can make a significant difference.

You can travel by:

  • Private car
  • Bus
  • Taxi
  • Tempo Traveller

If you’re travelling as a couple or small family, a Mysore to Wayanad cab gives you flexibility.

For larger families or groups, a Mysore to Wayanad Tempo Traveller allows everyone to travel together with luggage and makes sightseeing easier.

FlyRB already offers Mysore-to-Wayanad cab services, including round trips and larger vehicle options for groups. Its current service page specifically mentions sedan/SUV options and Tempo Traveller and bus rentals.

Is Two Days Enough for Wayanad?

Two days are enough for a highlights trip, but not enough to explore all of Wayanad.

The district has enough attractions for several days.

With additional time, you could explore:

  • Soochipara Falls
  • Chembra Peak
  • Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Kuruva Island
  • Thirunelli Temple
  • Meenmutty Waterfalls
  • Karapuzha Dam
  • Coffee and spice plantations

The Wayanad district and Kerala Tourism list many of these among the region’s major attractions.

If you only have two days, however, resist the temptation to cover everything.

7 Tips for a 2-Day Wayanad Trip from Mysore

1. Start early

The journey from Mysore is manageable, but an early departure gives you much more sightseeing time.

2. Check attraction timings

This is particularly important for places such as Edakkal Caves and Pookode Lake, which currently have relatively specific visiting windows.

3. Plan according to geography

Don’t choose attractions randomly. Group places that are in the same direction.

4. Keep the weather in mind

Wayanad’s mountain weather can change quickly.

5. Wear proper footwear

Some attractions involve climbing, walking or uneven terrain.

6. Don’t overpack the itinerary

Four or five good experiences are better than eight rushed stops.

7. Keep your return journey flexible

Traffic and road conditions can change your arrival time in Mysore.

When Is the Best Time for a 2-Day Wayanad Trip?

Wayanad can be visited throughout the year, but the experience changes considerably by season.

Monsoon

Expect lush greenery, mist and impressive waterfalls, but also wetter roads and slippery paths.

Post-monsoon

The landscape remains green and sightseeing conditions can be more comfortable.

Winter

Cooler weather makes it particularly pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Summer

Wayanad can offer a refreshing escape from hotter cities, although afternoon conditions may vary.

If waterfalls and greenery are your priority, the rainy and post-monsoon periods can be especially attractive — provided you’re comfortable travelling in wet conditions.

Why a Planned Wayanad Trip Can Be Easier

You can absolutely plan a 2-day Wayanad trip from Mysore yourself.

But you need to coordinate:

  • Route
  • Departure time
  • Attraction timings
  • Hotel check-in
  • Food stops
  • Parking
  • Vehicle
  • Return journey
  • Weather

When you have only two days, inefficient routing can cost you several hours.

That’s where a local travel company can help.

FlyRB Travels offers Mysore to Wayanad cab services, group vehicles and customised travel planning, making it possible to arrange the trip around your group size and preferred sightseeing route.

Final Thoughts

The best 2-day Wayanad itinerary from Mysore isn’t the one that contains the most attractions.

It’s the one that gives you enough time to enjoy the places you actually visit.

Start early from Mysore, experience Wayanad’s wildlife and ancient history on Day 1, then spend Day 2 among its lakes, viewpoints and mountain landscapes.

Most importantly, plan your route before you leave.

Wayanad is spread across a large area, and good route planning can make the difference between a relaxed road trip and two days spent rushing from one attraction to another.

If you’d rather leave the driving and route planning to someone who knows the Mysore–Wayanad route, FlyRB Travels offers Mysore to Wayanad cab services and group travel options that can be customised around your itinerary.

Because when you only have two days, the goal isn’t to see everything — it’s to make the two days count.

Yes. A two-day trip is enough to experience several major Wayanad attractions if you start early and plan the route carefully.

Around 5:00 AM is a practical target for a two-day itinerary, especially if you want to include Edakkal Caves or a morning wildlife experience.

A practical itinerary can include Edakkal Caves, Pookode Lake, Lakkidi Viewpoint and Banasura Sagar Dam, with Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary as an optional addition.

Kerala Tourism currently lists Edakkal Caves as open from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with Monday listed as a holiday.

Kerala Tourism currently lists Pookode Lake visiting time as 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Yes, but you should replace another major stop rather than simply adding it to an already full itinerary.

A cab provides greater flexibility for sightseeing and route planning. For larger groups, a Tempo Traveller can be a comfortable option.

No. Two days are enough for a highlights trip, but Wayanad has enough attractions and outdoor experiences to justify a longer stay.
